In ecology, a feeding frenzy occurs when predators are overwhelmed by the amount of prey available. For example, a large school of fish can cause nearby sharks, such as the lemon shark, to enter into a feeding frenzy. This can cause the sharks to go wild, biting anything that moves, including each o.

Big eats small. It’s the law of the jungle, the wild, the stock exchange, everywhere. Big eats small. Even fish know this, and they’refish! You eat the fish that are smaller, and run the hell away from the fish that are bigger. And if it seems like I’m trying to pad out this first graf by restating middle-schoolbiology, then you’re absolutely right. Because Feeding Frenzy, for the XBox Live Arcade,is, at heart, a very simple game: Eat, or be eaten. So I’m gonna throw a shout-outto my high school biology teacher, Mr. Case. ‘Sup, Mr. Case? I yammer on about videogames on the internet! For Science! So you’re this fish. And you eat smallerfish to get bigger, and then you can eat bigger fish. That’s pretty much the crux of thegame, there. I didn’t say this was going to be Finding Nemo: The Game, now, did I?Nope. You eat, because that’s what fish do. And occasionally you eat pearls, whichare great for points but don’t really make sense from a nutritional standpoint. I mean, calcium and all, and I get that. But bubbles with starfish in them? It’s clear that,at some point, this exercise in basic biology decided to abandon its principles and justbe a video game. That said, it doesn’t have any problem with maintaining the little scientificfactoids at the end of each stage. We get it. The ocean is beautiful. But I don’thear Morgan Freeman narrating this thing, so get back in line and give me POWER-UPS. There we go. As a fish, your inherent powersare limited to moving, and occasionally dashing with the A button. As the game progresses, though, you unlock bigger and more complex fish, which have abilities like Leon the Lionfish’ssuck attack. I can just hear Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis chanting in the background. Butno matter your fish, the goal is the same: Eat things, get bigger, eat bigger things.Bonuses are available for fast consumption and lighting up the word “Frenzy!” exclamationpoint, and by surpassing that yet again for a Double Frenzy rich in points -and- Omega-3fatty acids. And suddenly I’m having flashbacks to the Disgaea 4 review, so I’m going tostop that line of thought cold with some footage. Complete a stage without being eaten and you’llbe rewarded by a mermaid exhaling starfish, which seems more at home in an abstract 8-bitplatformer than in an ostensibly “educational” game. But I get the feeling that the educationalthing is just an veneer, so that PopCap could be comfortable in knowing that parents wouldn’tbe jumping down their throats. Which is kind of silly, seeing as how a majority of thoseparents are probably addicted to Bejeweled and thus right in their bleeding pockets. There are five fish to control, with several stages for each, and plenty of science todelight young and old. That is, if you’re of a mind to be delighted by science. Otherwise,it’s a cute little diversion, and there are achievement points to be had (as thisis a genuine XBLA title, and not an indie game). So you can inflate your score likea puffer fish, and.. man. That was bad. That was bad and I feel bad. Also, I’m hungryfor sushi. That’s what I took from this game, and what I hope you’ll take from itas well. Feeding Frenzy: Now you’re hungry for sushi. You’re welcome.

Insects have a wide variety of predators, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, carnivorous plants, and other arthropods. The great majority (80–99.99%) of individuals born do not survive to reproductive age, with perhaps 50% of this mortality rate attributed to predation. In order to deal with this ongoing escapist battle, insects have evolved a wide range of defense mechanisms. The only restraint on these adaptations is that their cost, in terms of time and energy, does not exceed the benefit that they provide to the organism. The further that a feature tips the balance towards beneficial, the more likely that selection will act upon the trait, passing it down to further generations. The opposite also holds true; defenses that are too costly will have a little chance of being passed down. Examples of defenses that have withstood the test of time include hiding, escape by flight or running, and firmly holding ground to fight as well as producing chemicals and social structures that help prevent predation.
